We now have a semester that was completely unconventional in almost every way behind us. It was full of turbulent changes, requiring us to practically overnight respond to new coronavirus measures imposed by the government and individual ministries. Simply put, it was a "high level of education" for all of us.
Despite all difficulties, we made it. Thank you all very much for your efforts; you have my admiration. As a matter of fact, I am very pleased because you have shown that we are able to mobilize our forces and overcome a crisis.
Events at our faculty did not stop when the state of emergency order was announced – quite the opposite. In addition to volunteering, individual workplaces found many ways to help within their specialisations. Read how in the following sections.
We are celebrating 100 years since the beginning of teaching at the faculty!
Last year, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the faculty, and this year we will commemorate another important anniversary. On October 19, 2020, exactly 100 years will have passed since teaching began at the Faculty of Science. On this day, therefore, as an expression of respect, we will ceremoniously present awards to personalities who have significantly contributed to the development of the faculty.
Martin Toul graduated with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Science at Masaryk University. He is continuing his Doctoral studies at the same faculty in the Molecular and Cellular Biology and Genetics program. He works at the Loschmidt laboratory of protein engineering and is a member of FNUSA-ICRC. He will now enrich his successful scientific career with a four-month research stay at the University of Texas in Austin (USA), for which he managed to obtain a prestigious Fulbright scholarship.
This year, our faculty will join the pan-European event Scientists Night, which will take place on November 27, 2020. Its central theme will be ‘Man and Robot’. Due to the uncertain situation regarding the organisation of events during the COVID-19 pandemic, we, like other MU faculties, are preparing a program under anentirely new concept - online. Visitors will have the opportunity to watch interesting scientific experiments and other activities through a special virtual tour and videos, both before and during the night. They will also have the opportunity to return to the tour later.

Garden party postponed for a year
Unfortunately, as the beginning of the Autumn semester of the 2020/2021 academic year has had to be postponed to October 5, 2020, it is unlikely that the weather would be suitable for outdoor events at that time. For this reason, it has been decided that the garden party at Kotlářská will not take place this year. However, we will continue this relatively new tradition in the next academic year and, we will start the academic year once again in 2021/2022 together with this event.

We are looking for blood donors
The management of the faculty would like to thank to all active blood donors from among our employees. We are now preparing a web form through which we would like to find out more about you. You will be soon receiving further information with a request for completion by e-mail.
In March 2020 we have extended the faculty System of Positions and Job Titles to all employees (in 2019 published for a research staff). This formed a grounds for revision of employee assignment to positions, which is currently happening at individual faculty departments.
The Dean’s Board have awarded the Dean Awards for the best students in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral study programme for the academic year 2019/2020. A total of 22 students have been awarded in two categories.
A lecture on climate change organised by the Institute of Geography under the auspices of the Dean of our faculty was held on Thursday, February 20, 2020, in the lecture hall of the MU Faculty of Science on Kotlářská. Ondřej Přibyla and Marek Lahoda, representatives of the Climate Facts project, spoke about the climate system, the context of climate and human activity, further developments, and inaccurate and erroneous arguments of skeptics. We thank the lecturers for a clear summary of the basic scientific facts and also all those who came for their vast interest and the quality of the follow-up discussion.

Prof. Phan Thanh Nam wins a prestigious award
The European Mathematical Society (EMS) prize has been awarded to Prof. Phan Thanh Nam. He, until recently, worked at our Department of Mathematics and Statistics and has now moved on to the Ludwig-Maximilian University of Munich. The EMS Awards are considered the second most prestigious award for mathematics after the Fields Medal, which is similar to the Nobel Prize. Since its inception in 1992, the EMS Awards have been presented every four years at the European Congress of Mathematics (ECM). At each ECM, 10 EMS Awards are given to young researchers under the age of 35 who are European citizens or are active in Europe in recognition of their outstanding contribution to mathematics.
Congratulations on your extraordinary success!

Open days
On January 25 and 28, 2020, our faculty opened its gates to more than seven hundred applicants for Bachelor’s or Master’s studies as part of the University’s Open Days.
On Saturday, February 29, 2020, the traditional Representative Ball of the MU Faculty of Science was held at the Semilasso Cultural Centre in Brno. The ball was organised by the MU Society of Natural Scientist with significant contributions from the Faculty of Science and other partners. This year, a diverse program was prepared, including a pre-dance, a midnight surprise and a raffle. Music provided by the Brno Wind Harmony group, the Relax Band dance orchestra and the Ponava dulcimer folk group made for a great atmosphere, easy listening, and, above all, a chance to dance.
