Communication and cooperation across cultures brings a lot of challenges. Each culture has some values, norms of behaviour and communication rules which people expect to be kept and understood. When people meet together, they usually do not talk about their expectations because they believe the others know. Consequently, cross-cultural misunderstandings appear and people avoid future cooperation or send non-verbal clues to show their disagreement. It often happens that people do not notice or do not understand the signals of cross-cultural conflicts and offence. Therefore, it is necessary to learn about other cultures and change “cultural lenses” while talking about professional matters. The best approach in your culture can be a wrong guidance for other cultures.

The international Mendel Genetics Conference, supported by UNESCO, will focus on current topics in human genetics, with a focus on rare inherited diseases and cancer predisposition, as well as animal and plant genetics, including GMOs and the genetics of bacteria and viruses. Ethical issues related to the diagnosis and screening of genetic diseases, the history of genetic research and the potential of new genomic technologies in medicine and agriculture will also be discussed.
The program of the conference, which takes place from 20 to 23 July, is very topical, scientifically attractive and will feature contributions by outstanding scientists and keynote speakers. Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry Ada E. Yonath from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and Thomas Cech from the University of Colorado have already confirmed their participation, and Paul Nurse from the Francis Crick Institute in London, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, will also come to Brno.
The organisers encourage scientists and experts to not hesitate and register. While participants have until 30 June to register, the deadline for submitting abstracts is set to 31 March.
