Afternoon with Chemistry or Chemistry Café: Lectins: the Key to Molecular Communication of Cells

Proteins are not just a component of the diet, but they perform a number of vital functions. This lecture will focus on lectins – proteins that are not very well known to the public, but are very interesting. Lectins are able to recognize and bind carbohydrates on the surface of cells, thanks to which they are used in many processes including immune reactions, cell communication, and some pathogenic mechanisms. The lecture will introduce the importance of lectins in nature and their practical applications. For example, we will explain the function of lectins, not only how human blood groups differ, but we will also reveal the principles of other important biochemical processes.
