Visitors to the Phd Day were very pleased with the event, which provided them with a comprehensive package of information on Doctoral studies. As such, the aims of the organisers, who plan to host the event every year, have been fulfilled.

What does a Doctoral study look like, what are the students’ rights and obligations, and what are the possibilities for funding studies? All these questions and more were answered at the second annual PhD Day, which took place on September 19 at University Campus in Bohunice. “I hope this day will help me decide whether to study for a PhD or not. I still have time for a definitive verdict but I want to know as much as possible in advance”, explained Daniela Rubanová, a student in her final year of Genomics and Proteomics. Indeed, she spoke for many who attended the event. Support for early-stage researchers is one of the most important aspects of the new HR strategy of the Faculty of Science, Masaryk University - HRS4R. “The main idea of the event was to hand over a complete package of information to PhD students, and allow them to meet colleagues from other study programs and other faculties. At the same time, we wanted to inform Masters students about Doctoral studies in advance and motivate them to continue at the university. They could also gain experience from current PhD students”, said Simona Kopalová, who was one of the organisers.

The program started in the morning with lectures in which visitors obtained detailed information on the form of PhD studies and the rights and obligations of students, as well as funding opportunities and the mobility program.

Information on opportunities for travelling abroad during Doctoral studies attracted Dominika Vaďurová, a Doctoral student in Kinanthropology. Dominika went on to say, “I have just started my PhD studies and I participate in sports as a professional at the same time, so I have very little spare time. Because of this, I need to know at least some basic information concerning individual study plans. However, I was most interested in a lecture on student mobility because I would like to go abroad later on in my studies”. She also appreciated the poster presentations of research groups held in the Campus corridor.

During this part of the program, Master’s students had the opportunity to reflect on their future research focus and colleagues, or to learn more about the development courses and other events offered to PhD students by Masaryk University.

All students of the Faculty of Science, CEITEC MU, the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Sports Studies could participate in the event. “This year, unlike last year, we had a program for all Campus-based faculties and the event was held completely in English, so foreign students were welcomed as well. I think that PhD Day has been a great success and we already have plans for future years”, said Simona Kopalová.
